For nine seasons, Andy Griffith’s superlawyer, Ben Matlock, kept the innocent out of jail, the guilty off the streets and audiences on the edge of their seats. This down-home whodunit ran from 1986 through 1995 and has since entered the pop-culture lexicon thanks to frequent name checks on shows like The Simpsons (Grandpa Simpson, naturally, is a devoted fan). Griffith, who turned 69 during the show’s final season, decided to hang up his signature white suit after appearing in every single one of the series’s 195 episodes.
